Inside Mount VS. Outside Mount: Which One Should I Choose?

Before measuring for blinds or shades, choose between inside or outside mounts, each with unique benefits.

  • Inside mount when there’s enough depth, a sturdy frame, and a well-shaped window. It offers a sleek look, highlights trim, and blends seamlessly without protruding.
  • Outside mount for shallow or irregular windows, better light blocking, added privacy, a larger window look, or to conceal trim while keeping treatments unobtrusive.

Measure the Window for Inside Mount

  • Width & Length Measurement

    • Measure width at three vertical points: top, middle, and bottom.
    • Measure length at three horizontal points: left, center, and right sides.
    • Round all values to the nearest 1/8 inch.Use the largest width and largest length from your measurements.
  • Depth Measurement

    • Measure the depth at the top of the inside window casing to ensure adequate space for a secure inside mount. This measurement will also determine if a flush mount, where the product sits within the window frame without protruding, is possible. The minimum depth depends on the type of shade.

Measure the Window for Outside Mount

① Check the Space
Measure the height above the window to ensure enough room for secure bracket and headrail installation.

② Measure Width
Measure outer edge-to-edge width of the window frame. Extend 1-2 inches on each side (total 2-4 inches) to minimize light gaps. This total width becomes your order size.

③ Measure Length
Measure the window’s outer frame height. If space allows, mount the shade 10-12 inches higher to accommodate stack height and maximize light exposure.
